As the stubble burning season returns, a concerning trend of deteriorating air quality across North India has prompted several major companies to take proactive steps to mitigate the impact on air pollution and manufacturing processes.
Leading the charge, companies such as HDFC, PepsiCo, Fidelity International, Royal Enfield, SBI Cards, Cummins, Birlasoft, and IOC have either initiated the setup of equipment or provided funding to address the issue of stubble burning.
Nestle, with one of its largest plants located in Moga, Punjab, has announced plans to implement the use of briquettes in biomass boilers starting from April 2024. This initiative is expected to reduce stubble burning in the district by 4%.
PepsiCo, a renowned beverages and snacks maker, has taken significant steps by setting up ‘biochar kilns’ in various districts in Punjab. These kilns, utilizing smokeless technology, have been established in Fatehgarh Sahib and Ludhiana, with plans to expand into Sangrur, Patiala, and Jalandhar districts. The company’s Biochar Project aims to combat stubble burning, with ongoing efforts to expand its reach and educate farmers on the issue.
The recent surge in farm fires in Punjab, attributed to delays in harvesting due to unseasonal rains, has raised concerns among agricultural experts. With a significant number of farm fires reported, particularly in Amritsar, the state faces a challenge in managing the annual production of paddy straw, which amounts to approximately 180-200 lakh tonnes.
The collective efforts of these companies signify a crucial step towards addressing the environmental impact of stubble burning and improving air quality in the region. By implementing innovative solutions and raising awareness among stakeholders, India Inc is playing a vital role in combating the challenges posed by agricultural practices contributing to air pollution.
